HEMANGIOMA
ABOUT THE PROCEDURE
A hemangioma is a benign (non-cancerous) vascular growth caused by an abnormal buildup of blood vessels in the skin or internal organs. They most commonly appear during infancy or early childhood, often as a raised, red or purplish lesion on the face, scalp, chest, or back. While many hemangiomas resolve naturally over time, some may persist, grow rapidly, or cause complications depending on their size and location.
In adults, similar vascular lesions may appear later in life and can be confused with other types of vascular or pigmented growths. Although hemangiomas are generally harmless, treatment may be considered for aesthetic reasons, recurring irritation, or if the lesion interferes with normal function.
Treatment for hemangiomas depends on their type, size, depth, and position. Options may include laser therapy, cryotherapy, or surgical excision. These treatments aim to reduce the lesion’s appearance or remove it entirely while minimising scarring and preserving healthy surrounding tissue.
-
Diagnosis: Clinical examination is essential. In some cases, imaging may be used to assess deeper lesions.
-
Treatment Time: Varies by method; typically 15–30 minutes per session.
-
Anaesthesia: Local anaesthetic is usually sufficient for comfort during treatment.
-
Downtime: Minimal for non-invasive options. Surgical recovery may vary based on complexity.
-
Aftercare: Keep the area clean and protected; specific post-procedure care will be provided.
-
Results: Most patients see gradual reduction or full removal of the lesion depending on the method used. Multiple sessions may be recommended for best outcomes.
